Child Abuse inquiry reveals at least 105 pedophile priests exist in Netherlands: Global Alert!

On December 16, 2011, NOS News broadcasted the official and final Deetman report that was published by the Commission of Inquiry into Sexual Abuse of Minors within the Catholic Church in the Netherlands.

After the world has learned of the organized crime schemes orchestrated by the Vatican through its priests and nuns in Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia, and Spain , now the world has learned that Holland was no exception. News reports show evidence of the abuse and torture that took place behind the doors of the corrupt and criminal Catholic institutions between 1945 and 1985, as revealed by this inquiry led by its Chairman Wim Deetman, Former Minister. This report indicates that of the 800 pedophile priests identified as abusers, 105 are still alive.

Beware of the Catholic Salesian Order and all of its other priests:
The investigation was initiated since when a stream of complaints got underway about the Salesians Fathers in Heerenberg, after unrest that already existed abroad, reached the Netherlands . After the reports of the Salesians priests surfaced, an alarming 1,500 testimonies further came forward. It turned out that priests systematically abused children in the Catholic institutions, just like in other nations.

1 in 5 children in the Netherlands suffered sexual abuse in Catholic institutions

According to a December 16 report of an independent commission of sexual violence in Dutch Catholic institutions, thousands of children suffered at the hands of priests and nuns.

The report is based on the study, which involved more than 34,000 people. The Commission found that one in ten children in the Netherlands was exposed to violence. Among children who had spent some of their childhood in Catholic institutions, this figure is twice as high, according to "Interfax" .

The Commission received 1,800 reported cases of sexual abuse in Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages. The number of abuse cases is in fact higher, considering that less than 10% of victims of abuse speak out...

The report also says that the Catholic Church failed to cope with an increase in sexual violence cases reported, and therefore this resulting sexual abuse scandal was inevitable.

Canadian Priest Charged with Two Sexual Assaults

The assaults occurred in the 1980s by a Catholic Priest named James Boudreau. The priest took advantage of the young men's friendship.

Boudreau served as pastor at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church from 1978 to 1985. Later, he worked at Kitchener's St. John's Catholic Church. A total of six Ontario churches.

The now 68-year-old former priest plead guilty to two sexual assaults in Guelph’s provincial court.

One of the complainants was an active member of the St. John the Baptist parish in July 1984 and was a family friend of Boudreau when the sexual assault took place, said assistant Crown attorney Steve Hamilton.

Since the age of 12, the pair who celebrated the same birthday would get together to celebrate with a movie or dinner, Hamilton said. Just before the victim turned 18, they made plans to have dinner and see a movie.

After dinner, Boudreau suggested they watch the movie at his home. Court heard both men drank about three to four beers, while they watched the movie and Boudreau began to discuss sex, showing the victim a book called The Joy of Sex.

Boudreau took the victim to another room and told him to lie on his back while he gave him a massage, Hamilton said. He suggested the victim remove his shirt and then told him to take off his pants. Boudreau stroked the victim’s penis through his underwear and then went on to perform oral sex on him, court heard.

Boudreau then had the victim perform oral sex on him, Hamilton said.
“The complainant became distraught and began to cry,” he said.

The victim left Boudreau’s home on foot. Boudreau got into his vehicle and followed him, convincing him to get inside so he could take him home, court heard.

Guelph Police arrested Boudreau in January 2011 shortly after that victim reported the incident. News of Boudreau’s arrest had the second victim step forward and file a sexual assault complaint against him, regarding an incident dating back to 1983.

Court heard the second victim was 15 in 1983 and sought Boudreau’s advice on entering the priesthood. Boudreau invited the teenager to his home to discuss his interest further.

At his home, Hamilton said, Boudreau told the victim circumcision was a requirement of the clergy and asked whether he had been circumsized. The Crown said the accused asked the boy to remove his pants to check and he then took the boy’s penis in his hands, when the teen expressed discomfort and told him he had been previously abused.

Court heard nothing further happened.

“You can appreciate these events were from 30 years ago ... but he accepts these facts,” Yachetti told the court.

The defense lawyer said he would be seeking a conditional sentence on behalf of his client, when they returned for sentencing on April 13. The Crown also expects to submit victim impact statements at the time.

Yachetti declined comment Wednesday as he exited the courtroom Monday as did a friend of one of the victim’s who was present.

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican's hipocrisy and relentless attempt to cover up crimes continues. This week, on January 25, the Vatican signed a total of 3 international treaties to so-called "support the fight against illegal drug trade, financing terrorism and organized crime".

Their tactics long used to deceive the nations with its false pretence of standing for justice is still at play. With one hand the Vatican signs treaties, while with the other it continues to lead the organized crime schemes they have long orchestrated worldwide.

By signing onto these international legal instruments on January 25, the Vatican "confirms its intention as well as its effective and practical commitment to collaborate with the international community in a manner consistent with its nature and mission, with a view to guaranteeing international peace and justice," wrote Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, the Vatican secretary for relations with states.

Perhaps they were hoping the world was still left unaware of their long track record of child trafficking they have managed to cover up for centuries.

Where exactly was their so-called "peace and justice" when the priests and nuns stole and sold 300,00 babies from Spain and another 500,000 in Australia? What ever happened to this so-called "commitment to collaborate with the international community" when they falsely converted over 100,000 orphans into "mentally-ill" patients to conduct human experiments on them in Montreal? The Vatican released copies of its declarations supporting the 3 treaties on Jan. 26.

The Vatican ratified the U.N. Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances to help "contribute and to give its moral support to the global prevention, repression and prosecution of drug abuse and the related problem of illicit trafficking in narcotics and psychotropic substances," wrote the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who certified the declarations. A very interesting comment indeed. How can the very criminals that financed the world's largest genocides in history now be the ones to "protect the victims of such crimes"? Yes, the Vatican financed Canada's genocide of indigeneous people, they did the same in Australia in fact. Yes, the Roman Papacy, indeed, the ones that financed the Rwanda genocide in 1994, the very organization that financed Hitler, and many more.

The Vatican can continue to claim "to uphold the values of brotherhood, justice and peace between persons and peoples" just like Cardinal Bertone just claimed this week...but its days are counted, and their hiprocisy and deceit is becoming more clear each day. Catholic Priests in Hong Kong Accused of Child Sexual Abuse

The diocese in Hong Kong admitted it recieved complaints against three priests after claims of sexual abuse were reported in the South China Morning Post. The chancellor of the Roman Catholic Church Rev Lawrence Lee told the Post the alleged abuse took place over the past 11 years.

The Church had previously said they happened over three decades.
Hong Kong police said they would investigate the claims "as soon as possible" and urged other victims of abuse to come forward, French news agency AFP reported.
None of the accusations were reported to the police before the story appeared in the newspaper.

The diocese said two of the first three priests accused of abuse, whom it said were Chinese, had been suspended from their positions.

The third, it said, had "reportedly committed a sexual abuse offence in his home country many years before arriving in Hong Kong", and had been barred from working with children.

"The church's image and reputation will no doubt be affected, but this is a fact we have to face," Reverend Lee told a television programme.

He admitted the diocese had offered the alleged victims financial aid but denied it was to buy their silence.

"We made such an offer in case the victims had financial problems paying for counselling or psychological treatment," said Reverend Lee.

He said none of the families had accepted the offer.

The Church has 300 priests and runs a similar number of schools and kindergartens in the former British colony.

38 Cases of Sexual Abuse by Priests in New Zealand

Once again, the Roman Catholic Church has delivered a public apology. Now, it's directed to sexual abuse victims in New Zealand.

In a formal letter, New Zealand's bishops expressed "grief and shame" in regards to sexual abuse involving members of the clergy. "The deepening realization of the number of cases of sexual abuse perpetrated by priests is a cause of grief and shame to all of us," said the letter. "The betrayal of trust and the harm that has been done, especially to the young and the vulnerable fills us, your bishops, with a deep sense of sadness and betrayal."

"To those who are victims of abuse, and to their families, we express our deepest regret and most sincere apology."

The Church has confirmed 38 cases of sexual abuse by priests, brothers and lay church members going back over several decades.

The bishops have offered complete confidentiality for people who come forward with new allegations.

The Church is also promising to help complainants take the matter to the police if they want to.

The apology follows recent revelations by the Church about previously secret investigations and payouts by Church authorities.

The Church says it will no longer insist on confidentiality clauses in compensation deals with victims.

Some victims said the apology was too little, too late.

One man, identified only as Patrick, who received a secret $30,000 payout from a Catholic religious order after alleging sexual abuse has spurned the apology.
He told the New Zealand Herald, the church statements were "hollow words".

"It's not only me - it's affected so many people," he said.

"A lot of priests and a lot of brothers knew what was going on but they kept quiet about it - and that's wrong."

Patrick, now 51, was sent to Marylands, a Christchurch residential school for slow learners, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The school was run by the St John of God order. A Catholic "brother" sexually abused Patrick there, in an upstairs room.

The New Zealand Herald reported that when Patrick, as an adult went forward with the abuse allegations, St John of God responded by offering him $30,000 on condition he keep quiet about his claims.

The pedophile, Brother William Lebler, now in his 80s and living in Australia, has denied the allegations.

Catholic Church admits to Atleast 200 Pedophile Priests in Philippines

In Philippines, about 200 of the 7,000 Catholic priests in that country committed some kind of "sexual misconduct." This conduct can include child abuse, homosexuality and affairs. This is a count of the last 20 years.

In their first official response, the Catholic Church in Philippines has apologized for their clergy's conduct. The Catholic Bishops Conference stated they have now drafted guidelines on how to deal with these offenses. A protocol is being drafted by the bishops on dealing with sexual abuse cases. The guidelines will include encouraging victims of assaults to file criminal charges, said the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Orlando Quevedo.

Once sexual scandals in the US by Catholic priests came to light, the media in Philippines began reporting abuses by local priests. Atleast 85 % of the country

is Catholic.

"To the various crises in society, we must now, with great sorrow and shame, add problems in the Church", said a statement by the bishops read to a news conference on Monday.

"Sexual misconduct on the part of shepherds of the flock betrays the holy priesthood that Christ has shared."

The Philippines is one of several Asian countries which have been wracked by sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church in the past few months.

Bishops in Australia and New Zealand have apologized to dozens of victims of sexual abuse carried out by priests and police are investigating several priests in Hong Kong for alleged indecent assault.

Ricky Lavallie: 1960-2012

Ricky Lavallie is dead.

He was a 51 year old native man, and was the sole witness to the murder by three Vancouver policemen of another key aboriginal activist in our network, Johnny Bingo Dawson.

The sudden death of Ricky Lavallie on January 3 has wiped out the last of my original core supporters among urban native people in Vancouver and Winnipeg. Our original nucleus of the Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared(FRD) has been extinguished.

In barely two years, all of our strongest activists, and those who forced the missing residential schools children into national and world consciousness,have died: Chief Louis Daniels, Elder Phillipa Ryan, Johnny Bingo Dawson, William Combes, Harry Wilson, and now Ricky Lavallie.

These deaths follow on the earlier, equally sudden demise of keyeyewitnesses to murders in Indian residential schools: Archie Frank,Willie Sport, Joe Sylvester, Virginia Baptiste, Nora Bernard, andHarriet Nahanee.

These witnesses, and the dead native leaders of our FRD, were instrumental in publicly naming the churches and government of Canada as being guilty of crimes against humanity. And they have all paid the ultimate price for doing so.

I charge these religious and state organizations with their murders.

I charge the E Division of the RCMP with complicity in these deaths, along with the head officers of the Roman Catholic, Anglican and United Church of Canada,and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In the case of Ricky Lavallie, I charge the Vancouver Police Department with complicity in his death. For I have two separate videotaped testimonies of Ricky from last August, in which he states that a Vancouver police sergeant threatened him with imprisonment and death if he continued to speak about his witnessing of the deadly beating of Bingo Dawson by the same sergeant and two other Vancouver cops on December 6, 2009.

I have written the following obituary and tribute to my friend Ricky, for his steadfast courage and devotion to the missing children. I hope and pray, as always, that some of the spirit of such a brave soul will pass into us, and help us all awaken from complicity.

Let us see and name the murders still happening, and bring down those responsible.

Ricky Lavallie: May 20, 1960- January 3, 2012

His tears flowed so easily whenever he remembered how his five year old brother was killed by a catholic priest bearing an electric cattle prod at the Portage laPrairie residential school in 1968. He carried the terror of that day with him at every moment, for he refused to numbly forget. But nevertheless, Ricky Lavallie was always at my side at every rally and vigil outside churches across Vancouver, and he never wavered.

I lost more than a friendin Ricky, but a brother warrior: one who could have created the usual excuses of most people to stay away from all of our righteous confrontations with cops and priests down the years, as we battled impossibly for disclosure and justice. Rick more than anyone had enough cause to hide, but he never did.

I once marched with Ricky and only eight other people down one of Vancouver’s busiest streets during rush hour traffic, bearing the banner that he clung to like his memories: “All the Children Need a Proper Burial”.

As passersby gawked at our little army, and cars lurched to a stop to let us pass, I turned to Ricky and said,

“How are we doing,Rick?”

He smiled, which was rare,and shouted cheerfully,

“We’re doing great!”

Ricky was the one who walked with me to the front of a church sanctuary during a busy mass,as we occupied the main catholic cathedral in Vancouver on Palm Sunday in 2007. I recall how he gazed solidly at the priest who was berating and threatening us, and said quietly to the red faced idiot,

“When are you gonna give me back my brother’s body?”

Before we were banned from the airwaves of the former “Vancouver Co-op Radio” – now amuzzled subsidiary of the corporate Pattison Media Group – Ricky regularly regaled our listeners with life on the streets, his time in the death camp called residential school, and with his latest song, strummed out on a three strong guitar we kept lying around the studio. But his best moments were with his fellow survivors of church torture, when they faltered on the air and broke down in the flood of dark remembrances that he carried and endured so nobly.

“That’s okay, we’ll get those bastards” he’d say softly to a man or woman amidst their sobs, placing a large and tender arm around them. And then he'd shout into the microphone,

"Screw those churches!"

We did get those bastards, again and again, and Ricky showed me in the flesh how and why his kind are inheriting the earth. He was the kind of man who no bribe and no threat could stop: and so, even now, he hasn’t been stopped.

Ricky’s great joy, of course, was that he was a central character in our documentary film Unrepentant. Just to know that his story and that of his brother were now known to millions of people around the world seemed to make up for all that he had lost. Whenever he saw me on the grimy streets of East Hastings he’d lumber over to me and ask for another few copies of our film.

“They can’t ignore us anymore, right?” he’d exclaim.

The last time I ever saw Ricky was in October, during the Occupy Vancouver encampment. My friend spent his days there leafleting mostly indifferent occupiers about the residential schools genocide, and he never stopped talking about his murdered brother to anyone who would listen.

From there, one day, he led a dozen people on a Sunday morning to the same cathedral he had helped occupy that bright Sunday in 2007, and he stood almost alone in the face of dozens of burly Knights of Columbus and the usual brutal phalanx of cops who try so pathetically to guard the church from Judgement.

Ricky Lavallie left the world in such a spirit, as he had lived: resolute and unbroken and truthful, despite his scars, and his deep fears.

It’s never enough to write about another fallen hero, or to remember him, or even to continue on in the sacred work he died for. The long sadness, the lengthening shadow of aloneness among we fewer and fewer veterans of this campaign, is never lessened by the bright light of their example. But somehow we carry on anyway, like Ricky, remembering, as he always did, all of the little ones who suffered and died, and the ones who will tomorrow if we let go of our banner, or our memories.

Catholic Processions Exploit Children and Puts Them in Great Danger

Catholicism and its expired teachings has had Latin America 2000 years behind, forcing people to continue conducting processions that only serves to bring poverty, slavery, sickness and curse to the nation. One of the group of protesters, who were mainly French and Spanish, arrived in a pope's outfit bearing the slogan "indignant heart", a reference to the Spanish Indignados protest movement.

Police moved in when one of the protesters scaled the large Christmas tree standing in the square. Two of the group and one officer were injured in the subsequent scuffle as police in riot gear cleared the demonstrators from the square. Three of the group were detained for identification.

Children's Safety not a Priority in Catholic Schools

On Sundays, during my last year at Downside School, I would meet a Benedictine monk for extra philosophy lessons. He would unlock the Monastic Library, and there – away from the noise and distractions of the school – I’d learn about Plato or Kant for a couple of hours. Father patiently answered my questions and, at the end of each session, gave me a week’s reading.

There is no sinister twist to that story. The monk was simply being generous with his time. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you were expecting one. For, as it happens, a disturbing story, about the same school and the same Monastic Library, has recently come to light.

Richard White – known as “Father Nick” – taught Geography in the 1980s. He used to lure one 12-year-old boy to the library and subject him to sexual abuse there. On each occasion, the boy was paid 50p.

I didn’t meet Father Nick at Downside. In fact, I didn’t know he existed until he was jailed last week for five years. At that point, the Abbot of Downside emailed all old boys and girls. “I apologise without reservation for what he has done,” he wrote.

But there was another admission in the email: until his arrest, Father Nick had “been through therapy and a risk assessment and had lived under restrictions”. And where had he lived? In the monastery attached to the school, from 1999 to 2010. The email ended with the school’s motto: Apud bonos iura pietatis (“Among good men there are laws of piety”). It had never sounded so hollow.

So what were they thinking? The Benedictines who educated me plainly decided that Father Nick didn’t pose a threat to pupils. The monks wouldn’t have allowed him to live at Downside otherwise. I am certain of that.

But cases of abuse at other Benedictine schools have shown such decisions to be dangerously naive. At St Benedict’s, Ealing, a known paedophile, Father David Pearce, was allowed to live in the monastery next door – even though the High Court had awarded damages against him for abusing a pupil. He sexually abused a pupil again, as recently as 2007, and is now in prison.

Former Downside pupils are asking the obvious question: what if Father Nick had crept out of the monastery and committed another heinous crime? It’s alarming to consider that when I was there, he’d have been able to walk through the monastic cloisters to gain access to the school.

To restore its reputation, St Benedict’s called in Lord Carlile, the Liberal Democrat peer and QC, to report on historic cases of abuse at the school. He concluded that a “more modern form of governance would have rendered it more likely that abuse would have been suspected, detected, rejected and the future secured”. He recommended that a new educational charity should be established, entirely separate from the monastery. St Benedict’s accepted his conclusions in full.

Other Benedictine schools, however, seem reluctant to follow suit. When Lord Carlile noted their “strikingly similar” governance structures, parents at Ampleforth received a message from their abbot. “[Lord Carlile’s] opinion does not in fact reflect some important recent changes introduced in the governance of our schools,” he said. This was due to an education trust taking responsibility for the school and its junior department. Incredibly, though, all the Ampleforth trustees are monks – and will be until September.

Such a sluggish response makes me lose sympathy for Catholics who claim they are besieged by the forces of secularism. Yesterday I spoke to Downside, which said that the relationship between monastery and school was being “reformed” and that Lord Carlile’s recommendations would be taken into account, as well as “other models of governance” (Ampleforth’s, I assume). But despite some media reports, it is not necessarily true that the monks are to “lose control” of the school.

It must be said, Downside is a radically different place from my schooldays. It’s fully co-ed; there are coded locks on almost every door; and the monastery is in effect divided from the school. That’s why a young letter-writer to this paper recently complained that, because of Ofsted’s “Kafka-esque absurdity”, he could no longer visit the abbey pastoral centre “for a coffee and a slice of cake” with the monks.

To some, this is more evidence that secular forces are using child protection laws to target religious schools and destroy the centuries-old Benedictine ethos at a place like Downside. I disagree. The days of cake and coffee at the monastery – not to mention one-to-one tutorials in the Monastic Library – are over for a simple reason. The porous relationship between monastery and school was a wonderful thing, but because of it children were not always safe. If Benedictine schools cannot guarantee that safety, they will play into the hands of those who want to remove religion from education entirely. And it will be their own fault.

Priest Headmaster of a Catholic Boy's School Accused of Sexual Abuse

In a statement released Thursday, Rev. Giles Hayes, the abbot at St. Mary's, said the incidents involved "a minor boundary violation with an adult" and that his conduct "was not criminal." Anthony S. Cicatiello, a spokesman for the St. Mary's Abbey that runs Delbarton School, claims the church has been investigating Father Luke Travers since June 2011.
While Father Travers is under investigation, the Rev. Adrian Harmenning has replaced him as administrator at the Virginia abbey.

Delbarton is an elite college preparatory academy situated in Morristown, New Jersey. Travers, a Benedictine monk and former administrator at Mary Mother of the Church Abbey in Virginia is under investigation while he was headmaster for sexual misconduct.

According to Hayes, the complaint was turned over to the local prosecutor's office, which declined to press charges. Capt. Jeff Paul, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office, declined to comment on whether or not Travers was under active investigation.

'Because he loved me.'

The Benedictine monk had been serving as non-residential administrator at the Mary Mother of the Church Abbey since 2010 when a letter was sent to church officials alleging that Travers, 55, had sexually harassed at least two former students at Delbarton.

The letter came from a Washington man named Patrick Marker, who advocates for victims of sexual misconduct within the church. Two victims of Traver's attentions had reached out to him in the past few months and Marker was demanding that the church take action.

One victim claimed in the 1980s, then-headmaster Luke Travers had grabbed his crotch and butt and asked him inappropriate questions about his girlfriend. The former student was then about 14 years old.

Another, according to NBC, stated that Travers "crossed boundaries which betrayed the inherent trust which is sacred to his position as a teacher and a priest." According to the victim, who alleged that the first incidents began in the 1990s, Travers became more aggressive when the boy came to him after his father died. According to the letter, Travers offered the high schooler and began kissing his neck and ears.

When the young man tried to get him to stop, Travers kept going. "[He said there was] nothing wrong with what he was doing, because he loved me," the second victim wrote. When the second victim returned to Delbarton after graduating, he claims that Travers asked the adult teen to run away with him.

According to Marker, who says he himself was abused in 1983 at a Minnesota prep school run by Benedictine monks, Travers is a sexual predator, a monk who has been grooming victims for his sexual abuse for years without reprisal.

'It was a shock to us.'

According to church official, Travers only visited the abbey a few times a month, and remains a resident of New Jersey. Although the Richmond, Va. abbey owns and operates Benedictine College Preparatory school, Harmenning claims that Travers had no personal contact with the students.

But while the Benedictine monk may not have been involved in the abbey's prep school, Travers had been allowed to say Mass for students over the past few months, despite being under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct.

According to Cicatiello, at Delbarton, Travers has been under investigation for months, and had been placed under restrictions that barred him from contact with anyone under 25. He was not supposed to have any contact with students, and was banned from saying Mass for anyone other than his fellow monks.

If that was the case, however, Harmenning never heard of it. According to him, the Virginia abbey knew nothing about Travers' restrictions, or that he was under investigation, until the fateful letter arrived.

"It was a shock to us as much as it was to anybody else," Harmenning said.

Travers Returns to New Jersey Monastery

According to the Paterson Diocese website, Father Travers was ordained in 1986 at St. Mary's Abbey in Morris Township.

He received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1979, a master's degree in theology from The Catholic University of America in 1984 and a master's of education degree from Harvard in 1999.

He served Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls and Corpus Christi Church in Chatham Township before becoming headmaster at Delbarton.
Harmenning said the Rev. Luke Travers had returned to his New Jersey monastery while the church conducted its investigation. A message there was not immediately returned.

'...what really happened behind those walls.'

Patrick Marker, having learned of the Mary Mother of the Church Abbey's response, said he was pleased by their quick reaction.

"It's not a bold move, it's the right move," he said of . "It's a move he [Harmenning] should have never had to make if the officials in New Jersey and the officials of the American Cassinese Congregation [which oversees both abbeys] had done their job."

Mark Serrano, a national advocate for sex abuse victims, was similarly furious with church officials at Delbarton and those higher up in the ACC, saying their handling of the allegations is suspicious at best and questioning why they didn't inform the Va. abbey of the investigation into Travers that began in June.

"I wouldn't trust the school's characterization of the incidents as 'minor' until we know all the facts," Serrano told NJ.com. "In the meantime, we must make sure Travers has no contact with children."

Marker, meanwhile, is preparing for the brunt of the Delbarton and St. Mary's "PR machine and legal team." He feels he's more than prepared for whatever they throw his way.

"I'm ready for it," he said, noting how hard it can be for victims of sexual "misconduct" to come forward when faced with the institutional might of the Church and a place like Delabarton school.

"I've got victims who are calling me, crying about the relationships and about what really happened behind those walls."

In a letter to the parents of the 1,500 pupils at the £26,000-per-year Downside School in Somerset, Dom Aidan Bellenger, the Benedictine Abbot of Downside, apologised to parents and named some of the monks who were picked out by a criminal investigation looking at 50 years of confidential school records. Seven Roman Catholic monks with links to a top public school have faced police investigation over child sex and pornography offences, the school has admitted.

Of the seven monks from Downside, four had faced police action and two, against whom allegations "were founded" , had restrictions imposed on their ministry. The seventh was cleared and allowed to return to his monastic life.

The school has already announced a "major review of the school's governance" that would result in "significant changes" after a monk and former teacher at the school, Richard White, was jailed for five years on January 3 for sexually abusing two 12-year-old boys in the late 1980s.

His abuse was known about by monastic and school staff at the time but he evaded criminal charges for more than 20 years!

"We are truly sorry that children and young people have been abused by those whom they should have been able to trust," Dom Bellenger wrote. "We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that such things do not happen again. We must never underestimate the great damage suffered by the victims of abuse. Their bravery in telling their stories has resulted in radical changes in the way safeguarding is approached. Victims of abuse are in our prayers and the sadness we feel for what they have suffered will be with us always."

"These unhappy events inevitably cast a long shadow, but your chief concern will of course be the welfare, security and happiness of children currently at Downside. Many steps have been taken to ensure that the Downside portrayed in some parts of the media is a thing of the past."

In a page-turning cover story this week in SF Weekly, Peter Jamison reports:

[D]ocuments obtained by SF Weekly suggest that Mother Teresa knew one of her favorite priests was removed from ministry for sexually abusing a Bay Area boy in 1993, and that she nevertheless urged his bosses to return him to work as soon as possible. The priest resumed active ministry, as well as his predatory habits. Eight additional complaints were lodged against him in the coming years by various families, leading to his eventual arrest on sex-abuse charges in 2005.The priest was Donald McGuire, a former Jesuit who has been convicted of molesting boys in federal and state courts and is serving a 25-year federal prison sentence. McGuire, now 81 years old, taught at the University of San Francisco in the late 1970s, and held frequent spiritual retreats for families in San Francisco and Walnut Creek throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He also ministered extensively to the Missionaries of Charity during that time.

Did Teresa know about the sex abuse allegations before championing McGuire's reinstatement? Alas, yes. The woman known the world over as the go-to comparison for acts of benevolence knew all about his "sad" acts. She even went as far as admitting that a cover up was imperative in order to protect the lucrative priesthood industry. Jamison goes on to explain:

In a 1994 letter to McGuire's Jesuit superior in Chicago, it appears that Mother Teresa acknowledged she had learned of the "sad events which took [McGuire] from his priestly ministry these past seven months," and that McGuire "admitted imprudence in his behavior," but she wished to see him put back on the job. The letter was written after McGuire had been sent to a psychiatric hospital following an abuse complaint to the Jesuits by a family in Walnut Creek."I understand how grave is the scandal touching the priesthood in the U.S.A. and how careful we must be to guard the purity and reputation of that priesthood," the letter states. "I must say, however, that I have confidence and trust in Fr. McGuire and wish to see his vital ministry resume as soon as possible."

Among some of McGuire's sexual abuse admissions? Showering with a teenage boy from Walnut Creek, "soliciting body massages" from the kid and allowing him to "read pornography in the room they shared on trips together."
According to a jarring April 2011 article by The Bay Citizen on Catholic child abuse in San Francisco, McGuire, now 80 and in federal prison, worked as a teacher and priest at USF from 1976 to 1981 "before being fired for highly questionable acts." He was also the head father at St. Ignatius Church.
Mother Teresa, who died in 2000, is best known for her work in Calcutta where (with limited success) she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, "while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries." The now-dead nun could also face losing any chances at sainthood provided the Catholic Church comes to its senses regarding the ingrained and, yes, unforgivable practice of protecting child-molesting priests.

A nun with 87 Charges Related to Sexual Child Abuse Won't be Named

An application by the State to prevent the naming of a criminal has been granted to a Catholic nun. This criminal is facing 87 charges relating to sexual abuse of children.

Prosecution counsel Dara Foynes made the application at Sligo Circuit Court, where the nun appeared yesterday. Judge Tony Hunt granted it. He has also banned publication of the name of the county where case had been moved from for hearing.

Earlier, the court had heard that the case was moved to Sligo at the request of the nun's legal team.

"There are 87 counts in relation to offences of a certain nature," said Ms Foynes.

Judge Hunt remanded the nun on continuing bail to appear at the same court on March 6.

The Pope and his friend lost contact during World War II in the invasion of Poland in 1939 and didn't find each other again until 1965. Kluger was in Rome where he worked for a company importing and Archbishop Karol Wojtyla attended the Second Vatican Council. Both thought the other had died in the war.
When, in 1978, he was elected Pope their friendship intensified and Kluger organized many meetings between the Pope and their classmates in Wadowice in Rome and in Poland itself.
The media reported that Kluger was said to be in the synagogue of Rome when it was visited by John Paul II in 1986 and he called Jews "our beloved elder brothers."

48 Catholic Schools Closing in Philadelphia: 4 High Schools and 44 Elementary Schools

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that they plan to shut down about a quarter of its Roman Catholic high schools. Nearly 30% of it's elementary schools will either be closed or combined because of rising costs and low enrollment.

"We can't afford to fool ourselves," Archbishop Charles Chaput said at a news conference. "We need an honest response to serious losses that have been happening year after year in some of our schools. And this will continue to happen if we do nothing."

The system's current enrollment of 68,000 students is the same number the archdiocese served in 1911. It also represents a 35 percent drop in the student population since 2001. The archdiocese already had closed 30 schools during the past five years, leaving 178 schools in the city and four surrounding counties.

The closures announced Friday will reduce that number dramatically.
"It's extremely sad," said Rita Schwartz, president of the local chapter of the Association of Catholic Teachers. "Right now, there is a grieving process going on in 44 elementary schools and four high schools."

Officials estimated about 1,700 teachers and 85 administrators would be displaced and have to reapply for positions in newly consolidated schools.

Superintendent Mary Rochford estimated that about 300 teachers could be out of jobs once the dust has settled.

The Blue Ribbon Commission, created in December of 2010 by Chaput's predecessor, Cardinal Justin Rigali recommended the closures. Chaput said he'd accept the commission's recommendations barring any major factual error in their report.

In Philadelphia, the commission's analysis revealed that the average parish subsidy to schools had grown from $255,000 to $320,000 over the past 10 years. It also showed that elementary school tuition rates fell $1,500 short of the actual cost of educating each child.

The mean annual elementary tuition in the U.S. is $3,383, according to the National Catholic Education Association. The mean annual high school tuition is $8,787. These numbers vary in each Catholic school in Philadelphia.

The commission's report also set forth strategies for sustaining the Catholic system for future generations. Philadelphia has the second-highest enrollment among dioceses nationwide, just behind Chicago, according to the education association.

Chaput was told the commission's proposals could mean the archdiocese might go 10 to 15 years without more school closings. He also stressed that Catholic school closings affect educational choices for families of all faiths. Especially in troubled urban neighborhoods, Catholic schools are often seen as a safer and more enriching alternative to failing public schools.

Mayor Michael Nutter issued a statement Friday that read in part: "Let's not forget that we are one city, and we're all in this together."

Nationwide, Catholic schools have lost more than 587,000 students since 2000, according to the National Catholic Education Association. At least 1,750 schools have closed.

Considered one of the deadliest fires in American history, it took the lives of 92 kids and 3 nuns at Our Lady of the Angels School, leaving families physically and psychologically scarred for life, and destroyed a close-knit working-class neighborhood.

Newfoundland Catholic Priest Charged with 38 Sex Offenses

News that a Roman Catholic priest has been charged in western Newfoundland with dozens of sex-related offenses over two decades shook the church Wednesday.

The offender, Rev. George Ansel Smith was suspended last year from his duties as a church administrator in Kinkora, P.E.I., and is now retired.

Bishop Peter Hundt of the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador said news of the charges hit hard. He stated in an interview that it's always difficult and it brings a lot of emotions to the surface for everybody.

He faces 38 charges including several counts of gross indecency, sexual assault and indecent assault on a male.

The RCMP say the charges stem from a 16-month investigation and that Smith turned himself in to police. Smith appeared in provincial court in Corner Brook in connection with alleged incidents between 1969 and 1989. He was released on conditions and is to appear in court on Feb. 23 for a plea.

Hundt said the diocese has co-operated with police and wants members of the public to help the RCMP with their investigation if they have information.
"Any allegation of improper conduct by a priest is an extremely serious matter," he said, reading from a statement.

"The diocese has developed extensive procedures to foster a safe environment for all the members of our faith community, and has also developed a clear policy and procedure for replying to allegations of sexual misconduct." Hundt said church officials are especially mindful of the alleged victims in this case, the latest to rock an institution that has repeatedly grappled with sex abuse involving clergy.

Police would not release details on the ages of the alleged victims as a matter of confidentiality.

Smith has not worked in the Corner Brook region for more than 20 years, Hundt said. Smith moved to P.E.I. in 1994 after working in Deer Lake, N.L., near Corner Brook, from 1986 to 1991. He had also worked in nearby parishes.
He was removed in May 2010 from his duties at St. Malachy's Church in Kinkora, P.E.I., after Bishop Richard Grecco got a call from the diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador about an abuse allegation.

Grecco said at the time that Smith was distraught but understood that a priest must leave the parish immediately after any allegation of abuse.

I’ve been advised by people apparently in the know that America officially became a police state this past week, with the passing of President Obama’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Meanwhile, across the waters, friends in Ireland have just denounced in righteous indignation the convening of “secret courts” of the Roman Catholic Church to investigate itself for raping children, and silence in-house stool pigeons in the process.

Well now, that’s all a big surprise.

I guess the outraged internet commentators who tremble and bemoan the repercussions of the NDAA have never heard about that great liberator Abraham Lincoln’s “emergency measure” laws during the U.S. civil war, whereby he shut down opposition newspapers, jailed dissenters without trial or habeas corpus, and ran the country like a one man fief.

And what’s so new about there being one law for us, and another for child-killing priests? Secret church courts? Yeah, I’ve been there.

I often think that the degree of our moral outrage at injustice is directly proportional to the degree of our own ignorance and naivety about the kind of culture we live in, and loyally maintain: one that has been built on and thrives upon the crushing oppression of all sorts of people by both church and state, here at home and abroad.

The only problem these days, it seems, is that such an iron hand is now starting to descend on the lives of certain privileged, bourgeois, dare I say “white” folks: a fact that’s supposed to get us all concerned. I mean, we can’t have our rights violated now, can we?

I’ve seen friends killed by cops, thrown from their homes, blacklisted into suicide and legally robbed of everything by official agents of law and order. Most of these people were dark skinned, or poor, or simply alone. And all during their torture, nobody complained about how their fate marked the commencing of totalitarianism in our midst.

Ah, but those were just isolated individuals, you might reply. These new police state laws affect everybody. Well listen up, dummy: how did you think those laws we now face were able to come about, except by what was happening first to all of my friends, while you all stood by and looked the other way? They were the trial runs, the test cases. And now it’s your turn.

If not poetic justice, you could call it historical inevitability.

I helped make this present sorry mess happen, too, of course. I was only shaken out of some of my own complicity when I experienced the big boot of church tyrants who tried and sentenced me to public execution in a secret ecclesiastical court that no law could touch. The Attorney General for British Columbia even said so, in a letter to me: “The internal disciplinary processes of the United Church are outside the jurisdiction of this department (read: the law)”. I told the world about that particular tyranny, and nobody cared, starting with the B.C. Civil Liberties Association and every lawyer in sight.

I don’t carry much of a grudge anymore about all that cruelty, regardless of how it destroyed my life, because it opened my eyes. It put me on a higher and necessary path and purpose. So I counsel all of today’s chicken littles who see the sky crashing down on their little world at the hands of that evil Mr. Obama to realize that Big Brother is actually giving all of you a rare gift, and an opportunity: to know how the rest of us live.

Be that as it may, another advantage of all this unusual honesty by the state in so openly declaring its monstrous nature is that it puts more and more of us in the same boat. Our ranks are swelling with some very pissed off people. Like any naked act of terror, the NDAA and other such assaults is creating a new generation of freedom fighters where once resided mere bubble headed techno serfs. So I thank Obama, really, for his efforts at sharpening the minds and the love of liberty in so many erstwhile complicit Americans.

As for his counterparts in the hierarchy of that even more ancient tyranny called Roman Catholicism, all those pathetic priestly turds are the best thing that’s happened for secular humanism and free thinking since the days of Martin Luther. I hear that some of the Irish are so outraged at these secret church courts that they’re planning on invading their sessions and trashing them, and putting the child-raping priests on trial in common law courts of their own making.

And being Irish, you can bet your brogans they’ll do it, too.

Man, I love tyranny. I love repressive laws. They’re the whip that awakens a slumbering humanity, and forces us to know what matters, and what we must do.

One of the guys that made the American Revolution and its Republic, and whose words would undoubtedly qualify him for arrest and secret trial by the present U.S. government, was good old Thomas Paine. Battling exactly the same tyranny that grips America today, and facing the same odds as we do, Tom Paine exhorted the stumbling and weary veterans at Valley Forge with these words, born of misery and oppression:

Catholic Priest in Pennsylvania Resigns after being Accused of Stealing Money from Church

A Catholic priest who worked for Word of God Parish for 16 years has resigned over accusations that he took money from the church in Swissvale, PA.

The Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese said the investigation of the Rev. Francis Drabiska is now being handled by the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office. No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.

"It has become clear through careful review of parish finances by diocesan auditors that funds have been misappropriated in some fashion from Word of God. As is our policy in such cases, the information gathered is being turned over to civil authorities. Father Drabiska acknowledged that he took funds and subsequently resigned as pastor," said a written statement from Bishop David Zubik.

Zubik was out of town Monday and unavailable for an interview, according to the diocese.
The Rev. Ron Lengwin, a diocesan spokesman, told Channel 4 Action News' Bob Mayo that questions were raised when routine audits by the diocese showed a dip in funds dating back to 2005.

The police also determined the arrangement of the accommodation, for example that the home's residents were locked inside their rooms in the upper floor of the home in Elliðahvammur in 1945-1964.
Violent treatment and sexual abuse has been reported at these two homes; former residents of Breiðavík participated in the making of a documentary, At the Edge of the World (Syndir feðranna; 2007), where they described their treatment at the home.
The state treasury has now paid out ISK 520 million (USD 4.4 million, EUR 3.3 million) of the ISK 920 million (USD 7.7 million, EUR 5.8 million) earmarked in damages to approximately 300 individuals who were subject to maltreatment or abuse at these homes.

The damages range from ISK 400,000 (USD 3,400, EUR 2,500) to ISK 6 million (USD 50,000, EUR 38,000) per individual.

A total of 325 applications for damages have been received, most, or 131, of which are in relation to Heyrnarleysingjaskólinn, school for the deaf, followed by 123 related to Breiðavík, a home for troubled boys.
At Wednesday's press conference the committee's chairperson Róbert Spanó said the most important lesson to be learned from the report is that no costs should not be spared when it comes to supervision of child protection and facilities at treatment homes. "Few things are as drastic for a child than to be taken away from its parents and family and accommodated far away from its home due to a decision of public authorities," the report concludes in its summary.

The committee was established in 2007, originally to investigate the operations of Breiðavík, but since moved on to investigate other state-run homes as well. In the period of investigation, 43 individuals have described to the committee the maltreatment or violence they were subject to at these homes.

A total of 400 interviews were conducted on behalf of the committee in 2007-2011 and its reports amount to 1,500 pages.

Iceland's Former Catholic Bishop Sexually Harassed Three Women in 1996

The present bishop of Iceland Karl Sigurbjörnsson said the church did not come to the aid of three women who accused former bishop Ólafur Skúlason of sexual harassment in 1996. “The church failed these women,” Sigurbjörnsson told Fréttabladid.

However, he denies having tried to force the women into dropping their allegations. When asked why he didn’t go to the police he said he had been very surprised by the women’s claims. He said he was a small pastor and didn't want to believe something like that and had been on the defensive.

One of the women who accused Skúlason of sexual harassment, Sigrún Pálína Ingvarsdóttir, told the media that Sigurbjörnsson had tried to hush the matter up, something the bishop denies.

Sigurbjörnsson said he did his best to mediate between the three women and the former bishop while this case was at its height in 1996. When Skúlason refused to apologize to the women, the case was closed as far as the church was concerned.

In regard to another heated debate involving the church, the bishop deemed Pastor of Reykholt Rev. Geir Waage’s recent comments to Morgunbladid that priests should not report on their knowledge of sexual violations against children as unfortunate. He said he is planning to discuss the matter with Waage and said Waage will have to explain himself. “He is on his way to my office,” Sigurbjörnsson said. Waage’s comments have provoked harsh reactions; some priests have demanded that the bishop make him redundant.

According to Brynjar Níelsson, chairman of the Icelandic Lawyers’ Association, priests are obligated to report violations against children. He estimates, the confidentiality of priests ends when it infringes on the law of child protection.

A report by visir.is states that Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs Ragna Árnadóttir claims that the obligation to report crimes exceeds all other obligations priests might have. She discussed these matters with the bishop.

Sigurbjörnsson agrees, telling Fréttabladid it is crystal clear that priests have to follow the national law, regardless of what ethical regulations of the priesthood might state.

These two affairs have caused a number of people to delist from the State Church. The bishop said it is obvious that many people feel that the church is failing in its role towards the public. The delisting is evidence of the seriousness of the church’s situation.

Canadian bishop Lahey, 71, pleaded guilty last May to one count of importing child pornography and voluntarily went to jail to begin serving time before his formal sentencing. Ottawa airport officials arrested Bishop Raymond Lahey in 2009 after customs authorities found almost 600 pornographic photos of young teen boys on his laptop and a handheld device. Adolescent boys engaged in sex acts while wearing crucifix and rosary beads were some of the images found.

Ontario Court Justice Kent Kirkland on Wednesday gave Lahey two-for-one credit for the time he served and two years probation. Double credit is not unusual. The federal government got rid of the provision in 2010 but Lahey qualified for it because he was charged in 2009 before the legislation was enacted.

Lahey will have to submit a DNA sample and register as a sex offender. He also will have to allow searches of his personal and office computers when required by the authorities. He has also been ordered to keep away from swimming pools, daycare centers and schools.

Defense lawyer Michael Edelson called it “exactly the right sentence.” Edelson said Lahey’s career in the church is over. He said Lahey wrote a letter to the Vatican last year asking to be defrocked but hasn’t heard back yet.

According to Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, church authorities would consider which church law measures to take once the criminal court case concludes. Disciplinary measures are imposed by the church he was in charge of not the Vatican. Lombardi said it wasn’t known when that decision would be taken but that he expected it would be made public.

Prelates who sexually abuse minors can be defrocked. Lesser punishments include being forbidden from celebrating Mass publicly.

Edelson said Lahey has been in solitary confinement and the conditions have been dismal. “He’s lost about 30 pounds (13 kilograms). He has a very severe skin condition now that he didn’t have when he went in. It’s been a very difficult period, and that’s one of the reasons there is a two-for-one credit,” Edelson said.

At a sentencing hearing last month, Lahey offered an apology to his church and to victims of child pornography. He said his addiction to internet porn went against his moral principles.

Lahey resigned as head of the Catholic diocese of Antigonish in Nova Scotia just before the charges became public.

“This entire matter has caused a great deal of hurt, disappointment and anger within and outside of our diocese,” new Antigonish Bishop Brian Dunn said in a statement. “Church leaders are called to provide good example and to show moral integrity in their lives. When they commit serious moral failures, this can have a significant impact on the faith community. This is especially so when it involves the crime of child pornography.”

This genocide took place in Jastrebarsko Concentration Camp, a concentration camp that housed Serbian children between the ages of one month to fourteen years during World War II, located in Jastrebarsko, Croatia. Through the camp passed 3336 children, more than 2,000 children from Kozara. During its operation 1,018 children died in the camp. Ilovara Franjo Francis, a gravedigger who was paid "per piece", buried 768 children in a six week period. About 1,300 prisoners were transported to Jasenovac. On August 26, 1942, the partisans freed 727 children from the camp.

Jocelyn Iahtail, a former resident of Attawapiskat, is now coming forward with personal recollections of abuse.

Iahtail says the sexual abuse and incest is an epidemic that spans generations; a scourge that plagues the community in a way that is impossible to ignore any longer. "The most frightening part is people know," Iahtail told CTV's Daniele Hamamdjian.

Iahtail says the abuse began when she was only four, and continued until she was 13. She says the abusers were people that she trusted, including relatives of some council members. Iahtail says the abuse in communities like hers is cyclical and systemic.

Iahtail's mother, Mary Lou, says she was abused while attending residential schools and on the reserve, victimized by family and the clergy. "My relatives, the priest, the nun's and the brothers," Mary Lou recalls. Recalling her childhood, Iahtail also says the abuse affected every portion of her young life. "I would become so overcome with nausea and vomiting. Just the simple act of brushing my teeth, because of the oral sex that I was forced to perform."

Iahtail and her mother decided to speak out this week because the pain continues to be pervasive in their community. They say they also want to break the cycle of abuse that has scarred her and many others. The scars on the community are obvious, Iahtail says: suicide, alcohol and drug abuse, gas sniffing and violence are mere symptoms. Indeed, while abuse may be less visible than squalid shacks and poor housing, it also insidious and destructive.

But because of familial ties and the tight-knit nature of many Aboriginal communities, exposing the abuse remains difficult.

"You have a lot of individuals who say it is bad medicine to speak about the extent of sexual abuse in our communities," she said "I can't even give you a number because there's so many … male and female." According to some estimates, the level of abuse is staggering.

"Sexual violence and sexual abuse in Aboriginal communities affect 75 to 80 per cent of our girls and women," said social worker Sylvia Maracle, from the Ontario Federation of Friendship Centres. With such an endemic problem, Iahtail says it's difficult to know where to start.

Shawn Atleo, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said that the abuse issue is one of the reasons why the entire system of reserves needs to be dismantled.

"This is why First Nations are calling for transformative change -- to smash the status quo," he responded.

According to Maracle, school officials have cautioned her about the issue, hinting that the abuse is so widespread that resources simply aren't available to deal with all the cases.

St. Joseph's Orphanage in Ireland a Place of Abuse by Catholic Church

Noel Walsh, a victim of sexual abuse in St. Joseph's Orphanage by a catholic clergy, still has the scars from the beatings and the mental anguish of the sex abuse perpetrated on him. His perpetrator was Myles Brady, a sadistic and manipulative, serial, sex offender. It has now emerged, that he committed a string of child sex abuse offenses in England when he obtained a job in the orphanage which was run by The sisters of Charity.

Although Noel Walsh made detailed statements about the abuse, backed up by other residents at the time, no criminal action was taken against Brady regarding his case. He wants to know why. He has formerly asked in writing for a public enquiry into; "what went on at St. Joseph's Orphanage" to the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter. Noel has vowed not to rest until the whole truth comes out.

There are still many unanswered questions about how St Joseph’s Orphanage on the city’s Waterford road was managed and about who knew of the depths of the sexual depravity being inflicted there on innocent young children taken from their families for a myriad of different social reasons.

He thinks that if the facts of the sickening saga of abuse of the innocent were made public earlier or dealt with promptly, the abuse could have been stopped earlier than it was and many victims saved from the terror, torture and suffering. Many people saw the little children from St Joseph’s Orphanage going up and coming from school and felt something was astray but felt powerless to help them, such was the dominance of those who ran the orphanage and their contacts within the community.

He has been through the High Court and received a settlement for what happened to him but he wants to know why it was allowed to happen and why to this day, the order has never apologised to him for what happened to him in the orphanage run by it.

Many of those with something to say about the abuse perpetrated by three convicted paedophiles, Teresa Connolly, Myles Brady and the infamous David Murray are still alive and willing to talk.

Noel Walsh is a survivor and he wants justice for those little children who lost their innocence and their childhoods while being protected by the nuns and their employees.

It emerged some time ago that the nuns who ran St Joseph’s knew as far back as 1954 that children in their care were being abused. Department of education inspector Anna McCabe reported in 1954 that nine girls had been abused by a painter employed by the Sisters of Charity. At the time it was argued by a priest that a court case would bring the convent into disrepute and that the experience would mark the children for life if they were called to give evidence. Following his advice, Ms McCabe agreed no prosecution should be taken.

What is very upsetting now in this recession is that the State has picked up the tab for the compensation to victims of abuse at St Joseph’s under the controversial deal between the then government and the religious orders.

Just to give a flavour of the level of compensation from St Joseph’s in the public domain paid for by the taxpayer: In a judgment on March 1, 2005, the High Court awarded Raymond Noctor €370,000 compensation, one of the highest such figures in an abuse case, following severe sexual abuse by care worker David Murray at St Joseph’s from 1972. Mr Noctor told the court he was raped two or three times a week and was subjected to severe beatings by Murray. Murray would set his Alsatian on him and once attempted to involve the dog in a sexual act.

Mr Noctor said in a statement after the court hearing that the actions of the State and the Sisters of Charity in trenchantly denying the validity of his claim over many years “heaped insult on top of injury”. The Sisters of Charity said they acknowledged that Mr Noctor was abused by Murray and were sincerely sorry for the hurt and suffering he endured.

In a High Court judgment in March 2005, David Connellan was awarded €300,000 following “vicious and demeaning” physical, sexual, emotional and racial abuse over five years at St Joseph’s by female and male carers. In a High Court decision in June, 2003, Michael Delahunty was awarded €75,000 following his sexual assault by Myles Brady at St Joseph’s in 1976. Mr Delahunty, aged 12 at the time, was not a resident at the orphanage but was visiting a friend there when the assault took place. His friend was sent on an errand by Brady, who locked the room door before the assault took place.

“We need to know how much was paid out and I’m sure people will be shocked to hear it ran into millions alone in Kilkenny,” Noel Walsh said.

Swimming Pool at St. Ann's Retreat

In the early 1920’s, the Catholic Church owned a retreat known as Saint Ann’s in Logan Canyon, Utah. The remnants of this place still stand today. This retreat was not for rest or relaxation. It was actually the place where the church sent those nuns who had committed terrible wrongs in their lives.

In many instances, this meant that nuns who had gotten a little wicked and wound up pregnant made their way here. They would live in seclusion, have their children, and the children would be discreetly given up for adoption without anyone knowing.

One nun decided that she wanted to keep her baby. She decided to give birth to it then steal away with it in the dead of the night. Unfortunately, the head nun at the retreat caught wind of her plan at the last moment. Soon after the nun took off into the woods with her baby, the furious head nun followed after her. The head nun completely lost it, and began yelling about how she would kill the nun and the baby when she caught them. Knowing she might not escape, the nun hid her newborn child under a bunch of brush. She took off and soon lost the head nun. She waited, scared and alone, in the wilderness for a few hours, then made her way back to the baby’s hiding spot to retrieve it. When she got there, her baby was gone. She feared the worse--the head nun must have discovered the child and taken it. She sprinted back to the nunnery only to have her worst fears confirmed. As she snuck around the outskirts of the grounds, she came to the pool that sat outside the buildings of St. Anne’s. There, floating face down, was her child. Overwhelmed by guilt, shame, and anger, the nun committed suicide right there at the edge of the pool.

The nun was seen as the bad guy in the situation, who got what she deserved. For years, Saint Anne’s continued to function and no one ever spoke of the awful atrocity the head nun inflicted on the nun and the baby. Nowadays, the spot is abandoned. The whole area was sold years later to a private family.

Victim of Magdalen Asylum for Wayward Girls book Exposes Nuns and Priests Sex Encounters and Baby Murders

Maria Monk

A book titled Awful Disclosures published by Maria Monk, in January 1836, exposed various scandalous events that, according to her, had occurred at the Hotel Dieu convent in Montreal. Her central claim was that convent nuns were having sexual relations with priests from the neighboring seminary who supposedly entered the convent through a secret tunnel. All babies born of these illicit encounters, Monk claimed, were baptized before being killed and dumped in a lime pit in the basement of the convent. Maria Monk said that she had lived in the convent for a total of seven years before becoming pregnant by a priest. Being unable to bear the thought of having her child killed and dumped in the basement, she had finally fled.
The publication of Maria Monk's book caused an enormous public outcry that fed on the prevailing anti-Catholic sentiment of the era. Leading protestants in New York and Montreal demanded an investigation of the Montreal convent, and in response to this pressure, the Bishop of Montreal finally did authorize an investigation. It turned up no evidence to support Maria Monk's claims, but American Protestants refused to accept these results, claiming that the investigation was biased because it had supposedly been conducted by Jesuits disguised as Protestants.

Col. William Leete Stone

A New York City newspaper editor, Col. William Leete Stone, asked the Bishop for permission to investigate with a team of protestants. The bishop granted his request, and in October 1836 Stone led a team around the convent. With Maria Monk's book in hand, he compared her description of the convent's interior with the convent itself. He found very little correspondence between the two, however he was not allowed to see the nun's rooms or the basement area and had to return to New York City, his investigation unfinished.

Later, Col. Stone, after obtaining permission to see the entire convent, performed a fuller investigation. He concluded that there was no evidence that Maria Monk "had ever been within the walls of the cloister."

Maria Monk's claims were discredited and she fell from public view. A rumor emerged that she had actually been a prostitute in Montreal, and that the years she claimed to have spent in a convent were actually spent in the Magdalen Asylum for Wayward Girls. She was later arrested for picking the pocket of a man who had paid her for sex, and she died in prison on Welfare Island, New York City, in 1849.

Despite having been shown to be false, The Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk, remained in print until well into the twentieth century.

20,000 children abused by Catholic Priests & Nuns in Netherlands

This time, a Dutch current affairs programme has just uncovered irrefutable evidence of how back in 1958 the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Netherlands has been informed that innocent children were being physically and sexually abused in its institutions: orphanages and boarding schools.

The proof is contained in a letter found in the very archives of the Catholic child protection services. This letter was written by a judge who had warned the board of the child protection services that the catholic clergy were sexually abusing children.

The board took action and sent various letters to the boards of institutions to warn them. The confidential letters mentioned a black list of abusers. But the Vatican hierarchy refused to take steps to stop the systematic abuse.

"Employees working for contractors with the Quebec Liquor Board (SAQ), owner of the land of the former Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Cemetery, affirm having discovered human bone fragments during a recent excavation. But SAQ stresses that it is a question of 'a single bone, too big to be human.'

“By the end of the afternoon, SAQ again stated it never had found any remains on the property. But faced with the facts, the company modified its version.

Four different sources, working for the enterprises whom SAQ made sign a

'confidentiality clause,' first told us about the discovery 'of human bone fragments' during recent enlargement work on the parking area for the distribution center of SAQ, to the East of the city.

Femurs, tibias, kneecaps, hipbones and sacrums

“We are talking about bones of various dimensions resembling 'femurs, tibias,

kneecaps, hipbones and sacrums' which were given to those in charge of SAQ.

SAQ acknowledges having found one bone, but claims that it was a question of an animal bone. It was said to have been found at the other extremity of the

property, on the site of former buildings of the Sisters of Providence farm.

No analysis

Yesterday evening, spokesman Michèle Perron conceded that its technicians and

engineers had no particular expertise in forensic medicine: 'We didn't keep the

bone and it was not analyzed.' SAQ does not have the intention of proceeding

with an in-depth analysis of the soil of its property.

Neither did the proximity of the former cemetery incite SAQ to report the event to the Montreal metropolitan police.

'When we bought the land, we knew that there had been a cemetery at that spot,' declared Mme Perron. 'But the waiver furnished by the nuns assured us that all the bodies had been removed during an exhumation in 1967.'

In 1974 and 1979, SAQ tried to acquire some of this land for $4.9 million. In the contract, the sisters were careful to decline all responsibility regarding the subsoil.

A public inquiry is demanded

While the Sisters of Providence took refuge in silence yesterday, a variety of voices were raised to demand the holding of a public inquiry.

Yesterday, the Sisters of Providence community refused to broadcast the slightest comment.

Superior Clare Houle, asked Le Journal to stop trying to communicate with her.

The Duplessis orphans deemed that the latest revelations strengthened the need for a public inquiry. The lack of respect that was shown to dead orphans says a lot to us about the respect shown them while they were alive.

Camouflaged truth

That was also the opinion of the mental health alternative resources group: “The Bouchard government is irresponsible in trying to camouflage the truth and buy silence,” declared president Colette Rondeau.

The Association of intervention groups in defense of mental health rights wishes

on their part that light is cast on the scandal.

"Refusing to open the books can no longer be allowed”, declared the president of the rights and liberties League, Mme Lucie Lemonde. “That pertains to the people's right to know their history so as to not repeat the errors of the past."

6 boxes for more than 2,000 corpses

During the exhumation of bodies of sick and 'Duplessis orphans' whodied in
Saint-Jean-de-Dieu, the Sisters of Providence are satisfiedregarding six boxes supposedly containing the remains of more than 2,000departed.

“In 1975, at the time of the construction of the Liquor Boardwarehouse, the work was interrupted by the discovery of bone fragments.Surprise was general. Had not the Archbishop's office attested that all theremains were transported to the Cemetery of the East in 1967?

By virtue of cost overruns, the contractor, Fitzpatrick Construction,sued the project administrator, IbervilleDevelopment, and blamed SAQ and the former owners, theSisters of Providence.

It was the transcription of their testimonies heard 20 years ago inSuperior Court which brought new light on the subject today. Hired by theSisters, Concrete Construction superintendent Yvon Geoffrion, affirms havingonly removed 'six boxes of bone fragments' (of 24 to 28 inches by six feet)during the exhumation in 1967.

Cemetery of the East director, Guy Marcotte, also confirms onlyhaving six boxes in his records. Called as an expert witness, Inspector PaulLandry, exhumation permits from the City of Montreal, stresses that it wouldhave taken 'a minimum of 150 boxes' to hold the remains of 2,168 corpses.

The general foreman of SAQ, Roland Tremblay, and Soil Inspectortechnician, Édouard Maholy, then testify that the cemetery recovered in 1975measured 320 feet by 120 feet and not 210 feet by 110 feet, as the Sisters'documents indicated.

According to Tremblay, the bodies were piled 'one on top of the other.'

24 Plastic Bags

A day worker, Jeffrey Arsenault, explained that he had then worked for 'a week and a half' picking up 'about 16bodies.'

He placed them in '24plastic bags' of the kind used 'for garbage' before givingthem to the Sisters. Some were buried in the earth, others were on the surface.

In her testimony, sister Marie-Paule Levaque prefers to speak of'scattered bone fragments' which would not justify, according to her, a newexhumation. “I was so under the impression that all had been dug up. I did not expectthat there would be much left.”

She also declares not remembering the exact placement of thecemetery, if it wasn't that it was 'more to the South.'

“We are in litigation before the tribunal with the contractor incharge of

excavation,” declared communications director Philippe Châtillon. “Ifthe

The city began to know about the hospitals which originated as Maternity Hospitals, but no one would dare talk about the building beside each hospital where they hid these unwed pregnant women, forcing them to do the laundry of the hospitals to earn their stay. Not to mention, the orphanages the began to be constructed beside each hospital as well, as a result of all the children they were stealing from the women they conned into giving up their babies - just so that the nuns could generate astronomical profits from selling each stolen baby.

These mother-baby homes were also well established in Mexico throughout South America, Japan and the entire planet.

• In Washington State, the Christian Brothers of Ireland settled with two dozen alleged victims in a single residential school.
• In Wisconsin, the director of a school for the deaf admitted to sexually abusing at least 30 boys and may have molested 200 or more.
• In Vermont, church officials settled with 75 men and women reporting physical and sexual abuse of shocking brutality at an orphanage.
• In Kentucky, an order of nuns settled with 45 men and women for physical and sexual abuse at another orphanage.

The table currently provides information on 31 residential institutions where 112 priests, brothers, nuns, seminarians, and lay people have been accused of sexually abusing children. In addition, 6 persons who are accused of sexual abuse elsewhere also worked at an institution on our list. The large numbers of alleged victims, the horrific nature of the abuse, and the advantage taken of entirely vulnerable children in 24-hour care, all link these U.S. cases unmistakably with the Irish situation. Ireland’s system of Catholic residential institutions for children was centralized and state-financed, whereas in the United States, the situation was more diverse. Residential institutions for Native Americans in the Western United States were state-financed but staffed by men and women religious, whereas orphanages and homes for disabled children were run by dioceses and religious orders. Yet there were financial and operational connections between the state and the Catholic institutions.

Almost every diocese had its orphanages, residential schools for the handicapped, and minor seminaries. Both the Irish and American systems endured robustly into the 1980s and in several cases into the 1990s. The Catholic church still operates many U.S. orphanages to this day. In fact, the 2009 edition of the Official Catholic Directory lists 403 orphanages currently operated by the Catholic church in the United States, up from 279 in 1960.

In both countries, inspection and supervision were lax to nonexistent, and in the resulting vacuum, children were tortured and raped. In the United States, brutal and depraved regimes often thrived in dioceses run by eminent bishops, and in Vermont, a future bishop is alleged to have abused an orphan at one of the worst institutions.

Exhumations of the graves of babies and positive DNA tests are proof that as many as 300,000 or about 15 percent of the total adoptions that took place in Spain between 1960 and 1990 were scandals centres on baby-trafficking by Nuns, priests and doctors over several decades.

The baby trafficking scheme of the Catholic church is finally being exposed worldwide. As of now, the ANADIR foundation led by Antonio Barroso is helping expose more than of 900 such cases that have come forward since January of this year, and they are being investigated by regional prosecutors across Spain right now but the numbers are escalating every month. When the Spanish Confederation of Religious Orders, a prominent Catholic organization was asked about it, they have declined to comment citing the ongoing investigations.

However, when Adler of BBC confronted a catholic a doctor named Dr. Vella, she says; ‘he grabbed a metal crucifix standing on his desk. He moved towards me, branding it in my face. ‘Do you know what this is?’ he said, brandishing it in my face. ‘I have always acted in his name, always for the good of the children and to protect the mothers. Enough!’

Exactly. They have always used the Lord's name to conceal themselves and commit crimes, using their false holy appearance to deceive.

Dr Vella who is accused for baby-trafficking reportedly said, Doctors and nuns told mothers that their babies had been born dead, or they had died shortly after birth when in reality newborns had been handed to would-be adoptive parents of a waiting list compiled by Nuns and priests for cash.

If mothers request to see their dead children after being told their newborns were dead, doctors and midwives would somehow deter them. Since the Catholic Church works hand in hand with world governments to commit and cover up crimes, attempts to investigate Spain’s baby trafficking as a national crime against humanity have been rejected by the country’s judiciary and resisted by its politicians.

However prosecutors are proceeding with their investigations.

If Sri Lanka’s, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith had been in charge of the Catholic Church in Spain by any chance, he would have first denied immoral act such as baby trafficking can ever take place in a Catholic institution.

Ranjith would have compelled the investigators to believe that all Catholic Nun’s are saints and role models of mother Theresa and selflessly work for the benefit of the destitute therefore free of vice.

Malcolm Ranjith would have not just vindicated all suspects but given a clean certificate for the clinic as well. Not just that, Ranjith would have capped it with a veiled threat to government that he will not participate at official functions unless investigations are withdrawn forthwith. And the entire investigation would have been swept under the carpet and investigators themselves would have been put under investigation for abuse of power.

Last week, ‘Prem Nivasa’ at Rawathawatta, Moratuwa was raided by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) on a tip off that an immoral baby-trafficking is taking place there. Yes, this is still taking place today.

An aspiring adaptor, apparently a foreign white couple is said to have been caught at ‘Prem Nivasa’ with a large sum of money who had admitted the money is to pay for a baby. We’ve heard Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith arguing that the money that the couple had with them is not to pay for the unscrupulous baby sellers but to be deposited on behalf of the baby for his future.

Why they carried such a large sum of money to ‘Prem Nivasa’ and not to the Bank was never explained. No doubt, Ranjith will come out with hundred and one answers if more questions were asked.

Devout Catholics of Sri Lanka who have been deceived and still believe priests are God fearing, Law abiding and Moral, readily accept the absurd idea that Ranjith visualizes.

Like their Cardinal, Catholics extremists are reluctant to believe NCPA had acted impartially. Some of them go so far as to accuse NPCA head Anoma Dissanyake is a publicity seeking hound who sensationalises everything to get limelight.

Six nuns initiated legal action against TV3 for exposing sexual and physical abuse levelled at their order in a documentary screened on November 5, 2000.

The program, part of the station's '20/20: Stolen Lives' series, featured an extensive interview with Philomena Byrne, who spent her childhood in an industrial school run by the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, during the 1950s and 1960s. Somehow, they believed they could continue to cover up their evil, but now the world is beginning to see that this documentary was only the tip of the iceberg since more women are now speaking out about all the horrid abuse the nuns committed in the Magdalene Laundries.

In this documentary, Ms Byrne revealed that she was a victim of extreme physical and psychological abuse committed by the evil nuns. At the time of the broadcast, the Sisters of Mercy rejected all claims of abuse - as usual. They even initiated legal action against TV3, well-known psychiatrist Anthony Clare and Crescendo Concepts, a production company owned by producer Louis Lentin.

Death and Abuse as a Result of Witch Hunts Today

Anyone who thinks that witchcraft belongs only to our past and imaginations should think again. Tens of thousands of people were executed as diabolists between the 15th and 18th centuries, an episode that for many signifies an age of ignorance and intolerance. Much of the world still believes in witches, their supernatural powers and malevolent intentions. And all too often the accused are abused and ostracised, or tortured and killed.

Here is one story. It happened in India's Jharkhand state in October 2009, but might have come from any part of early modern Europe. Five women were accused of causing harm, a suspicion bolstered by local witchfinders and a cleric. A mob dragged them before a large crowd, where they were stripped and beaten until the authorities intervened. They were lucky. Every year hundreds of Indians, mostly women, are murdered by their neighbours, usually in the most atrocious manner.

In sub-Saharan Africa the problem is even worse. The war in Congo (1998-2003) killed millions, mostly through starvation and disease. High child mortality was widely blamed on "night dancers" – witches who steal blood and smear poisons on houses. European witches of the 16th century were charged with identical crimes, for instance the Swiss plague-spreaders known as engraisseurs. In 1999 the pro-government chief of Mwenga fled an advancing rebel army, leaving his wife behind with the town's protective charm; the soldiers publicly buried her alive with the charm. In the province of Ituri, as many as 4,000 may have been killed.

In September 2009 the UN identified witch-hunting as "a form of persecution and violence that is spreading around the globe". In July this year the Witchcraft and Human Rights Information Network, an organisation established last year, will hold its first conference devoted to alleviating the crisis in developing countries.

The ferocity of witch-beliefs, however, knows no frontiers. The fundamentalist churches of some African communities in the UK sustain the concept of demonic possession and the need to fight it by physical means. In 2005 three Londoners were convicted of cruelty to an eight-year-old Angolan girl they believed to be a witch. Her tormentors, one of them her aunt, had tried to "beat the devil out of her". The trade in body parts taken from albinos in Tanzania for use in muti magic, also crosses borders and continents.

Far from being a historical curiosity, then, witchcraft is a living problem, a belief in occult forces to which all human beings are prone, but manifested in a way that is horrifically unfamiliar to people in the west. In Africa, India and south-east Asia, better education is important in the war against witch-hunting, but without the conditions that prevent neighbour fighting neighbour for scarce resources, and lawless armies unleashing rough justice, the spread of enlightened ideas will not be enough to stop the killing.

An anonymous tipoff informed police. The Prem Nivesa of Moratuwa, a hostel for young unwed mothers run by the Sisters of Mother Teresa is now impounded. Sister Eliza, superior of Prem Nivesa, is now in jail at the Women’s Prison of Welikada. A judge is set to charge her formally with illegal trafficking in children.

According to reports, last Wednesday, Anoma Dissanayake, head of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), led a group of people to examine the situation of the children and mothers living in the facility run by the Missionaries. “Police and NCPA officials burst into the home at around 11 am, causing panic. They checked every nook and cranny in the facility and took away our files,” a nun told AsiaNews. On Friday evening, two days after that, police agents took Sister Eliza and two nuns to a judge’s home. Sister Eliza was then taken by car to Welikada Prison, the two other nuns were taken back to the convent. “Police, NCPA officials and media rushed to our facility,” Sister Eliza said before her arrest. “They cross-examined the unwed mothers and took away many documents.”

“We have never been involved in child trafficking. It is against our faith,” she reiterated. “Our mission is to take care of unwed mothers and their children. We have never taken money for our work. Children are adopted in accordance with the law.”

There are nearly 760 convents of Mother Teresa worldwide with more than 5,000 missionaries. The Prem Nivesa has 75 children, 20 pregnant women and 12 new mothers.

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) is an independent organization under the Office of the President.

Mrs. Long filed a petition for divorce Thursday in DeKalb County Superior Court to end her 21-year marriage to the embattled minister. The church sent out a press release Friday morning saying Vanessa Long planned to withdraw her petition, but her attorney said later in the day that she had changed her mind.

In her petition, Vanessa Long indicated that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” and that there was “no hope of reconciliation of the parties.” She asked the court for temporary and permanent alimony, as well as attorneys’ fees and an equitable division of marital and non-marital property.
“Vanessa and I are working together in seeking God’s will in our current circumstances,” Eddie Long said in a written statement.

According to the divorce petition, the couple is “currently living in a bona fide state of separation.”

Slovenia Catholic Church Ordered to Pay Eur 50,000 for Sexual Abuse 20 Years Ago

The Maribor District Court has ruled that the Slovenian Catholic Church has to pay a EUR 50,000 in compensation to a woman who was sexually abused almost 20 years ago as a 7-year-old by late priest Karl Jošt.

The verdict against the Maribor Archdiocese, the Celje Diocese and the Artice parish was confirmed on Thursday by the victim's lawyer Rok Ceferin, who believes that the defence will lodge an appeal against the civil lawsuit verdict.

Jost was brought before court in 2006, but died in 2007, while charged on 16 counts of sexual assault against minors. The late priest abused a total of four prepubescent girls, including during confession, the web-page of the daily Delo repoted.

According to Ceferin, the verdict of the Maribor District Court is unprecedented in Slovenia.
The victim in question demanded with a civil lawsuit EUR 140,000 in compensation for psychological trauma and a serious health condition. Ceferin said that he may file an appeal against the amount of the compensation granted.

While saying that his client was satisfied with the verdict, he noted that the court had ruled that a certain part of the complaint had fallen under the statute of limitations.

The compensation lawsuit was launched in January 2010 and was conducted behind closed doors due to the sensitivity of the case, according to Delo. The trial against Jost began in 2006, he however died in 2007.

Nuns Sued for Intent to Profit from Land gifted for "Religious Education"

The Evergreen Park Village Board on Monday night rejected a proposed settlement with the Sisters of Mercy that would allow the religious order to build a retirement center near 99th Street and Central Park Avenue.

Trustees voted 4 to 2 to continue litigation against the Sisters of Mercy to prevent construction of a 146-unit center that would include a three-story independent-living building and a four-story, skilled-nursing/assisted-living facility.

Trustees Jerry Bosch and James McQuillan voted against continuing the lawsuit, which so far has cost the village $125,000 in legal fees.

Residents packed the board room as trustees heard numerous comments for and against the plan.

The village gave the land to the Sisters of Mercy nearly 60 years ago on the condition it would be used only for “religious educational purposes.” The village sued after the order proposed its retirement center plan.

“I’m terribly sad that we are not able to move forward,” said Sister Sheila Megley, project manager for retirement center. “We made every attempt to answer the issues raised by the residents.”

Resident Cathy Manahan, who’s against the order’s plan, said the Sisters of Mercy should honor their agreement with the village.

“We already have an agreement in place,” Manahan said. “What they want is a business venture.”

She said the Sisters of Mercy will eventually look to expand the retirement center, and “we’ll always have to be looking over our shoulder to see what’s being added.”

Manahan and Beth Amado have filed suit against the religious order to try to block the retirement center. That suit was filed in October when residents were dropped from the village’s lawsuit due to a difference of opinion.

The original plan included 212 units and a five-story independent-living building.

The proposed settlement of the lawsuit the village filed three years ago also includes fewer parking spaces and staggered employment hours designed to reduce traffic congestion on school days.

Many victims of Brother Bernard Hartman have contacted The Age after Saturday's report about the fight of alleged victim, Mariead Ashcroft, to have Brother Hartman charged by police for his alleged sexual abuse of her in the '70s. The ability of Victoria Police to extradite Brother Hartman from the United States to face sexual abuse charges has increased greatly due to the emergence of several victims.
The church failed to tell Ms Ashcroft or the police that she was not the only complainant about Brother Hartman's alleged paedophilia. Ms Ashcroft reported Brother Hartman to the Catholic church in 1999 and also received a written apology from the brother, who in the '90s left Australia for the US where he remains working as a Marianist.

Another female victim, who asked for her identity to be protected, claims that around 1993, she told several Melbourne Catholic church officials that she had been sexually abused by Brother Hartman.
The woman claims she was told by church officials that Brother Hartman would be ''monitored'' by the church in the US. But she insisted that the church did nothing to ensure he would be held accountable in the Victorian criminal justice system and that church officials did not pass on her allegations to police. ''I'd like him returned to Australia and to be charged and jailed. That is what the victims deserve from our justice system,'' she said.

The Melbourne Catholic archdiocese claims that there is no record of any complaints made about Brother Hartman. The woman and a third victim who contacted The Age yesterday have agreed to speak to Victoria Police investigating Ms Ashcroft's allegations against Brother Hartman in the hope that it may strengthen any criminal case against him.

Youth worker Les Twentyman, who taught at Altona school St Pauls with Brother Hartman in the '70s, has also come forward to speak about his concerns over the brother's suspicious conduct with students. He said several students complained to him of Brother Hartman's inappropriate behaviour, including him showing students photographs of genitalia and masturbating in front of a young female in his care. ''The fact that he is still in the church in a position of power as a brother makes a mockery of the whole thing,'' he said.

A senior US Marianist, Brother Joe Kamis, told The Age last week that Brother Hartman was still working with the Catholic church in Dayton, Ohio, but was on a ''safety plan'' to prevent him being alone with children.

The fresh allegations against Brother Hartman come after a manager of the church's social welfare arm, CatholicCare, Alan Baker blew the whistle on Saturday about what he claimed was the church's inadequate handling of sexual abuse allegations. Today, the head of CatholicCare, Father Joe Caddy, attacked Mr Baker in an internal staff email. ''The employee quoted by The Age [Alan Baker] works for CatholicCare but he is not authorised to speak on its behalf and his personal views do not reflect those of the organisation,'' Father Caddy told staff. ''Unauthorised public comments place at risk the welfare of vulnerable clients and the continuing support of the community, in particular the funders and donors we rely upon for our important work,'' he said.

In a letter to The Age, Father Caddy said it was more appropriate for ''an independent counselling service funded by the Church'', rather than CatholicCare, to help victims of clergy abuse.

The Bone that Could Change Everything: A Time to End our Complicity in Murder, and Reinvent Canada

The tiny bone weighs hardly anything, and yet it is the weightiest evidence in Canadian history.

The forensic specialists are nearly definite that it's the upper thigh bone of a small child, maybe four or five years old. This month, their tests will confirm what I felt was true when I recently lifted it from the soil near the former Anglican Indian school in Brantford: that the first of Canada's Disappeared - the missing and murdered residential school children - have begun to come home.

Canada and its churches tried for decades to bury and forget the bone, and the other remains of the 50,000 and more children who died in their residential "schools". And when these innocents' deaths could no longer be denied, the same guilty parties distracted us from their foul deed with "reconciliation" babble and a whitewashing "truth and reconciliation commission" that has not once turned over the soil at a residential school grave.

That's all about to change, in a way that most of us have yet to realize.

For one thing, once this bone, or others, are positively identified as human, the entire Indian residential schools issue becomes no longer a matter of public platitudes about "healing", but of a massive crime scene. Every possible church record and grave site connected to a residential school will have to be opened and examined by competent specialists - and that does not and cannot mean the RCMP, police or any agent of the Crown or church, who are, after all, complicit in the crime.

The opening of these graves, in other words, will require and compel us to reinvent Canada, transforming it from an agent of the Crown and its church partners to a sovereign Republic with the power to prosecute historic agents of genocide, such as, in the Brantford case, the Church of England and its head, Elizabeth Windsor.

Most mainstream Canadians want such a change to a Republic, anyway: 58% of them, in the latest national poll. And what better issue to ignite such sovereignty than the need to bring comfort and justice to innocent children who died at our hands?

Some of the good people in southern Ontario have already taken such a step by forming something called Not in Our Name!(Non!): a community network that wants to rally support for the excavations at the local residential school authorized by Mohawk elders recently, that I have helped to organize. But Non! is more than that. To quote one of its statements,

We are sickened and outraged by the acts of the Anglican, Catholic and United churches ... For generations, our ancestors have been lied to and fooled by these churches and the crown to fund the slaughter of native people, our friends and neighbors. They have killed children in our name and continue to profit from their crime by not paying taxes and having we, the taxpayers, foot their legal bills! ... The churches must instead account for their crimes not with words, or money, but by giving up their right to operate as protected corporations above the law ... We must take back our churches and our culture by returning the land and wealth they stole from the original people, and disestablishing their right to operate as anything larger than individual congregations. Perhaps that will allow moral as well as material reparations to murdered children ...

Non! could spell the death knell of the church corporations that have evaded justice for so long, simply because it's a movement emerging from within the churches themselves. One of the Non! organizers is a retired clergyman who actually left the church over its cover up of the residential schools massacre: a man who, like me, was pilloried and persecuted for his stand, but, unlike me, has chosen to stay silent about what happened to him. Until now.

Our excavations at the Anglican Indian school in Brantford are waiting for the new year, and more research, to resume, but already, three other indigenous nations have asked me to come and help them begin similar digs at their local Indian residential school mass graves.

Meanwhile, Non! is spreading as well, and setting up similar groups across the country. "White" Canadians, it seems, are switching their allegiance, and laying the basis for a sovereign nation capable of facing its past crimes and present possibilities. It all seems to echo the words of a Mohawk elder whom I've come to befriend and respect, Bill Squire, who said to me last week,

"Once we bring home our murdered children we've acted as a real nation, saying, this is our crime site. And then we're going to put Canada on trial."

Bill Squire will get his chance this spring, when a European Union parliamentary committee will hear and see the forensic proof of the dead children at the Brantford school - and much more. Canada could then face sanctions, and an international war crimes tribunal. And it will all be thanks to a small bone fragment, and many more like it, that you and I and many others will bring to light, by saying our Non!, loudly and clearly, and through action.

Clergy Abuse Case Barred by 3 Year Statute of Limitation

In Iron Wing v. Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, (SD Sup. Ct., Nov. 30, 2011), the South Dakota Supreme Court held that a lawsuit filed in 2008 by a victim of clergy sexual abuse committed over 40 years earlier is barred by the statute of limitations.

D.Z. Iron Wing, 64, filed a lawsuit in 2008 against the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, Blue Cloud Abbey, the Oblate Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and a nun and a priest he alleged abused him when he attended the school in 1953-1964. The religious organizations ran the school for decades, but the school has since been transferred to control of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. Lawyers in the case said the nun and priest accused of the abuse have died.

But he waited too long to file his lawsuit, the court ruled, citing a state law that places a three-year statute of limitations in abuse cases. SDCL 26-10-25 requires the suit to be brought "within three years of the act alleged tohave caused the injury or condition, or three years of the time the victim discovered or reasonably should have discovered that the injury or condition was caused by the act, whichever period expires later." The court said:

“Inquiry notice is determined by an objective standard.” ... Although Iron Wing perhaps subjectively could not “connect the full extent of his injuries to the sexual abuse, he was aware of enough facts to put him on inquiry notice.”... He knew he had been abused by two members of a religious order beginning when he was age ten and resuming at age thirteen, because of this abuse he was angry and harbored hatred against the church and its priests and nuns from the time he was in the eleventh grade, he left the school because of the abuse, and he never forgot the abuse. These circumstances were sufficient to “prompt a reasonably prudent person to seek out information regarding his injury or condition and its cause."

In 1928, Maltese children were included in the Christian Brothers migration scheme. This at the request of Perth-based Maltese priest Father Raphael Pace. The first Maltese child migrants arrived in Australia after World War II. Between the 50's and 1965, 259 boys and 51 girls were sent to Catholic institutions in Western Australia and South Australia.

Parents were made to believe their children would receive a better education in Australia. The Christian Brothers put many of these children to work on their building projects. The kids endured the same punishments and abuses as their British counterparts. Even forced to stop using their Maltese language and never learned to read or write English.
